Circus (Planet Circus / Club Circus)
Milwaukee
Summary
Circus opened in July 1976 at 219 S. 2nd Street, billed as a disco and dance club, in a space that had recently housed the short-lived bars Gary's Dance Club and Mister Z's. Founded by George Prentice and Jim Seeboth, it operated under several variations of its name, including Planet Circus, Club Circus, and Circus-Circus, and became a popular dance venue during the disco era. In late 1978 the owners sold the business to new managers, who reopened it as Club Circus.
Advertising tapered off through 1979, and the bar disappeared from the local LGBTQ press by that summer. The same location later became the bar Trash and then Club 219.
