Gary's Dance Club

Milwaukee

Summary

Gary's Dance Club was a short-lived gay disco that opened on South 2nd Street in late June 1975, occupying a space that had recently held the Gallery Lounge. Arriving at the height of the disco era, it promised the city an additional dance venue to rival the popular Factory. In August 1975 the club's liquor license was invalidated after authorities determined that James O'Connor, owner of the River Queen, was the sole shareholder of the license-holding corporation; his felony record made the license ineligible.

The business closed, and by December the location reopened as Mister Z's, beginning a succession of well-known dance clubs at the site.
