The Red Baron Bar
Milwaukee
Summary
The Red Baron, also called "The Baron," was a Milwaukee disco that opened in June 1977 with three main-floor bars, a central dance floor, elaborate disco lighting, and a lower-level lounge. Shortly after opening it faced discrimination complaints from women and Black men over its ID and membership requirements, which briefly threatened its liquor license. At its peak the club hosted notable performers, most famously a March 1978 appearance by disco artist Grace Jones.
By 1980 it was taken over by new operators and renamed simply "The Baron," becoming less gay-oriented before closing on January 31, 1981. Owner Bobby Bell later opened the bar Papagaio.
