Bar / Club

Park Avenue

Milwaukee

Summary

With a multistory dance floor, towering light displays, and an opulent interior, it catered to a mostly straight crowd except on Sunday nights, when it operated as a gay night under the name "Sundays." The Sunday-only gay programming generated controversy among other gay bar owners, who pressured LGBT publications to refuse the club's advertising; the dispute contributed to the demise of the magazine "Gay Milwaukee." Past its prime by the late 1980s, Park Avenue closed on New Year's Day 1989, and the venue later reopened as Nitro.
