New Yorker Lounge
Milwaukee
Summary
The New Yorker Lounge operated at the northwest corner of 5th and Michigan in downtown Milwaukee from 1952 until July 1975. Originally run by former Milwaukee police officer George Bemis, it appeared in a few national gay bar guides in the early 1970s. It stood across 5th Street from the Lampost bar and near the Royal Hotel. The same building hosted other notable LGBT-associated establishments over time, including the Loop Cafe and, later, the Lib Bookstore, before it was demolished in 1986.
