Dudley Howe
Madison
Biography
Dudley Howe (c.1910–1992) was the proprietor of the 602 Club, a Madison, Wisconsin tavern he opened in 1951 and ran for more than four decades. The bar was unusually tolerant for its era and became a long-standing gathering place for gay men, and Howe was noted for hiring Black, female, and openly gay bartenders well before that was common among Madison businesses. After his death in 1992 his daughter operated the club until it was sold in 1994.
