"We are a college without walls and a member of the community." The Medical College of Wisconsin has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to this mission, uniting with the community to fight the AIDS epidemic. President T. Michael Bolger takes great pride in the Medical College�s long-standing leadership in AIDS research and treatment. "We treated some of the first AIDS patients in Wisconsin. At that time there was a great deal of concern in the community. We are proud that the Medical College helped the community come to understand the epidemic." Since then, the Medical College of Wisconsin has become the preeminent AIDS research institution in Wisconsin. In 1983, its faculty contributed to the research that identified the link between hemophilia and HIV. As one of only five federally-designated AIDS behavioral research sites in America, the Medical College researches prevention strategies that will reduce HIV infection in Wisconsin and around the globe. Delivering care and treatment to over 300 HIV and AIDS patients in the last year and providing physicians to staff the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin Medical Clinic, the Medical College continues its strong commitment to the fight against AIDS. For Bolger, empowering people with knowledge is most important. "HIV is often misunderstood.
