Mary's Tap
Milwaukee
Summary
Mary's Tap, also called Mary's Tavern, was an early Milwaukee tavern at 400 N. Plankinton Avenue that counted gay patrons as a significant part of its clientele in the late 1950s. Previously known as the Old Mill Inn, it was among the city's first so-called "gay-for-pay" bars, and patrons recalled a comparatively protective police presence. Mary Wathen reluctantly managed the bar from 1959 to 1960.
In 1960 Wally Whetham reopened the location as the Black Nite, which would gain lasting fame for the 1961 Black Nite Brawl. The site was later erased by the extension of St. Paul Avenue across the Milwaukee River.
