Just Us

Milwaukee

Summary

Just Us was a Milwaukee bar open from September 1994 to July 1998, remembered as one of the city's most evenly mixed gay and lesbian venues. Opened by Kenosha attorney Steve Byers and Milwaukee businesswoman Janet Mueller, it featured a patio, a stage and dance floor, a full kitchen with a popular Friday fish fry, and frequent drag shows and pageants. Unusually for the time, it offered a glass-enclosed non-smoking lounge with its own bar overlooking the dance floor.

The bar also hosted LGBT community group meetings free of charge. After one co-owner experienced a personal loss and decided to move on, the owners closed Just Us following a farewell party in July 1998.
